1°Outside Pattern Predictions: Explaining the 14-day for June 17-July 1

The first workday of every week means our 1°Outside Pattern Predictions, where we explain the “why” of the 14-day forecast.  In this week’s video, Matt Noyes is focused on the breakdown of this week’s heat, the increased chance of showers and thunder you see for New England as we near the weekend, and what comes after that.

The Current Week: Heat and Thunderstorms

The heat is spiking due to a large ridge in the jet stream and high pressure building at the surface. This ridge is bringing in warmth, and we expect thunderstorms to break down the heat as a cold front arrives by the end of the week.

Early Week:

  • Temperatures: Mid-90s to near 100°F
  • Conditions: Mostly dry and hot (see our 1°Outside Today & 1°Outside Insights videos, posted on our homepage!)

Mid to Late Week:

  • Wednesday to Thursday: High temperatures from 95°F to 100°F for many.
  • Humidity: “Feels like” temperatures of 100°F to 105°F.
  • Friday to Saturday: Arrival of a cold front, increasing chances of thunderstorms and showers.

Weekend: Elevated Chance of Showers and Thunderstorms

As we approach the weekend, the jet stream will move south, bringing the chance of showers and thunderstorms. The cold front should pass by Saturday, but with the jet stream nearby, any atmospheric disturbances could trigger pop-up showers and thunderstorms.

Next Week: Seasonal Variability

Looking ahead to next week, the jet stream dips again, bringing a more seasonal pattern with an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms. This pattern, familiar from the spring, can sometimes bring cooler weather, but this time it may not be cooler-than-normal except for a day or two.

Week of June 26:

  • Temperatures: Near or slightly above normal, with highs around 80°F.
  • Conditions: Increased chance of showers and thunderstorms at the start of the week, and perhaps again at the end.

Early July: Heat Building in the Nation’s Midsection

As we move towards July 1st, the heat will build across the south-central United States, poised to move into the Ohio Valley and Midwest. Whether it reaches our area depends on the jet stream’s behavior.

First Week of July:

  • Temperatures: Above normal overall, with potential for increased showers and thunderstorms.
  • Conditions: Variable, depending on the jet stream’s position and influence, but the potential is there for multiple days with scattered afternoon/evening thunder.
