Sunday Evening Essentials: Prepping for a Chilly Week Ahead

In Pattern Predictions last Monday – our 14-day weather pattern prediction – we focused on a shot of chill likely to expand frost into Southern New England by the middle of this upcoming week.  We’ve arrived!  In addition, Matt Noyes preps us for the week ahead by illustrating that rain may start Monday for some, but it’s unlikely to finish it for most…though the wind will increase. Full details in our Sunday Evening Essentials and look ahead!

Topsfield Fair and More:
Monday marks the last day of the Topsfield Fair, and after early morning rain clears, the Fairgrounds will dry dramatically from mid-morning onward, with only a passing shower, breaks of sun and a drying breeze. Also, many of you shared photographs of Sunday’s “stratus undulatus” clouds that looked like ocean waves in the sky – if you haven’t seen it yet, you may enjoy our web post about how these clouds form, here.

Rain Continues Tonight, Improving Monday:
Rain is coming down this Sunday evening and will continue through the night. By 7 AM Monday, most of the steady rain will have moved out for much of southern New England. While a few showers may pop up in the morning, especially in northern areas, the day improves with some sun by midday in central and southern regions. The Northeast Kingdom in Vermont may even see a few snowflakes in the higher terrain on Monday afternoon.

Gusty Winds and Cooler Air:
As a storm system strengthens over eastern New England, gusty winds will pick up, particularly on the Cape and across northern New England, with gusts exceeding 30 mph in some spots by Monday afternoon. This storm brings drier, cooler air, leading to brisk conditions for much of the day. Temperatures will be cooler in the north, stuck in the 40s, while southeastern Massachusetts may reach 65-70 degrees thanks to a southerly wind.

Frost Potential Increases:
As we head into Monday night, the first frost of the season is likely for sheltered valleys, especially in western Massachusetts and parts of northern New England. Winds may prevent widespread frost on Monday night, but Tuesday night brings a greater frost risk, potentially extending into central Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and even parts of northern Rhode Island. By Wednesday night, frost may reach even further south, with the chance of freezing temperatures in some areas.

Looking Ahead to the Week:
Tuesday will be chilly with highs in the 40s and 50s, and frost chances expand further by night. Wednesday and Thursday continue the cooler trend, with daytime highs only reaching the 50s. However, the cold stretch eases by Friday, with a warmer weekend ahead—temperatures climbing to 65-70 degrees by next weekend, warmer than usual for this time of year.
