Sunday Evening Essentials: Cold Start to the New Week!

Tonight we’ll see a hard freeze in much of New England with dry air eager to cool under a mostly clear sky with a light wind.  We rebound by Monday afternoon – but still a distinct, cool feeling of fall – then see a big boost in temperatures for midweek, rising back into the middle 70s!  Matt Noyes has all the details to get you prepped for the week ahead – and a look at the New England averaged 14-day – in our Sunday Evening Essentials video.

Frosty Overnight Conditions

New England braces for a cold night as temperatures dip significantly under clear skies, with some areas expected to see a hard freeze. Northern New England will feel the chill the most, with lows in the teens and 20s extending through the Boston suburbs and reaching down toward Hartford and Providence. While this setup means chilly conditions, the light wind overnight should keep wind chill minimal.

Increasing Clouds with Scattered Showers Possible

Monday starts dry and chilly, but Northern New England will see thickening clouds through the day with a chance of light rain showers by late afternoon, first in the Champlain Valley and eventually into Northern Maine by evening, where some of these showers should mix with snow in the Crown of Maine, though amounts will be limited to a coating. For those farther south, a few sprinkles are possible into Tuesday morning.

Fire Danger Elevated Again Midweek

Brush fire concerns return this week. Despite light winds on Monday, winds from the southwest will increase Tuesday and Wednesday, then shift to blow from the west and northwest Thursday and Friday, prompting another period of heightened fire spread risk with our recent dry conditions, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. As the warm air advances, temperatures will reach the mid-70s by Wednesday in much of Southern New England, leading to lower relative humidity (drier air) with the continuing breeze.

Week-at-a-Glance: Temperatures and Wardrobe Choices

Expect a wide range of temperatures this week:

  • Monday: A cold start in the 30s with highs only reaching the 50s.  Fall coat weather!
  • Tuesday: Milder in the morning with highs near 70 as the southwest wind picks up.  Starting with the fall jacket or hoodie, short sleeves underneath.
  • Wednesday: The peak of the warmth with widespread mid-70s and shorts weather.

Temperatures will take a dip after a dry cold front moves through late Wednesday, shifting winds to the west and then northwest, bringing cooler air by Thursday into Friday and a return to autumn conditions for the weekend.

Long-Range Outlook: Rain Chances Increase…A Bit

The trend of dry cold fronts will continue, but in the second week of the 14-day, the pattern shows signs of moisture increasing at least a little bit. While no substantial rain is expected, disturbances may finally at least bring scattered showers. Though small, these showers would be a step in the right direction from the recent bone-dry conditions for many.
