Wednesday Evening Essentials: New Year, New Chill!

The first day of 2025 has set the stage for a dramatic weather pattern shift across New England, arriving tonight into Thursday and Friday. Expect gusty winds, accumulating snow in the mountains, and colder temperatures taking hold, says Matt Noyes, in this Evening Essentials video ahead of our post-holiday return to the routine!

Wind & Snow Tonight
This evening and overnight, gusty winds ramp up, reaching 30-40 mph in many areas and as high as 50 mph in exposed and elevated spots by Thursday morning. This wind will add to the winter chill, with “feels-like” temperatures dipping into the 20s tonight and even lower on Thursday.

Rain and snow showers will taper off across central and southern New England tonight, but the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine will see bursts of snow continue. Accumulations will range from a coating in the hills to 8+ inches in favored upslope areas like Jay Peak and Mount Mansfield in Vermont, the Northwest facing slopes of the Presidentials in New Hampshire, and Northern Maine.

Thursday Outlook
Thursday brings gusty west winds up to 50 mph in exposed areas, creating isolated power outages and making it feel cold despite actual high temperatures near 40°F in southern New England and in the 30s north. Snow showers will persist in the mountains, with travel conditions remaining slick at times in northern New England.

Looking Ahead
Friday and Saturday stay wintry feeling, with mountain snow showers continuing. A touch of ocean-effect snow could brush Cape Cod by Saturday, but the weekend looks mainly dry for southern New England.

The next big system to watch is early next week, potentially bringing snow Monday night into Tuesday for the East Coast, but the Mid-Atlantic looks more favorable for significant accumulation than New England does – still, we’ll track how close it comes to New England and keep you updated.
