Monday Insights:
A Weather Breather…
Enjoy the Snow!

After a weekend storm that packed a punch with snow, ice, and wind and rain, New England is now facing a much colder-than-normal stretch with gusty winds gradually subsiding. The next big question: Will a developing midweek storm stay south, or could it bring a glancing blow of snow to parts of southern New England? And, after several weekends in a row with winter storms, could we actually see a storm-free weekend ahead? Let’s break it all down.

Winds Slowly Easing But Still Gusty

Monday’s gusts of 50-60 mph have already led to scattered power outages, but the wind won’t just shut off overnight. While Monday night’s gusts should decrease slightly to 40-45 mph in the hilltops, Tuesday will still bring gusts up to 45 mph before a more noticeable calming trend by Wednesday.

A Developing Midweek Storm – What Will It Mean For New England?

A storm system is gathering strength over the southern U.S., tapping into Gulf moisture as it moves east. As it travels offshore Wednesday night into Thursday, New England will be on the northern edge of the system. Right now, the jet stream is positioned south of New England, which favors the storm mostly missing us. However, there are some signals that moisture may try to creep northward on Thursday evening and night, bringing light accumulating snow to eastern Massachusetts and points south.

Additionally, a separate disturbance may bring scattered snow showers to the mountains in northern New England on Thursday night. We’ll be watching these trends closely over the next couple of days.

Finally – A Storm-Free Weekend?

After weekend after weekend of storm systems, this upcoming weekend is looking storm-free at the moment! This is great news for skiers and snowmobilers, who have plenty of fresh snow to enjoy, without a messy travel day to get there and back. Temperatures will remain chilly but manageable, with highs in the 20s and 30s and a much quieter pattern overall.

Bitter Cold Lingers Through Midweek

With the gusty winds and Arctic air locked in, temperatures will struggle:

  • Tuesday: Highs in the teens north, 20s south. Wind chills below zero in northern New England, single digits elsewhere.
  • Tuesday Night: Lows in the single digits, with subzero wind chills in the north.
  • Wednesday: A slight moderation, but still only 25-30°F for many.
  • Thursday: Similar temperatures, with the possibility of light snow in southern New England in the evening.

A slight warming trend may start by Friday into the weekend, but winter is far from over.
