Weekend Insights: Stationary Front Focuses Rounds of Showers & Thunder this Weekend

The weekend forecast is finally coming into focus, and while we do have rain to talk about, the story isn’t all wet.

Danielle Noyes walks us through what’s shaping up to be a very classic New England spring weekend — one where the timing and placement of rain will make all the difference.

Let’s start with Saturday. We’re expecting a huge temperature spread — lower 50s in northern New England to the lower 80s in southern areas. That kind of contrast is exactly what fuels some scattered downpours and isolated thunderstorms, particularly from the afternoon into early evening. These won’t be widespread, but they’ll be hit-or-miss enough that you’ll want to keep our app handy for radar and alerts. A few storms could become severe, and may contain brief gusty winds, hail & frequent lightning.

If you’ve got morning or early afternoon plans on Saturday, many of us will be dry — especially south of the Mass Pike and along the South Coast. By Saturday night, rain chances shift northward and taper a bit.

Sunday starts mainly dry in southern New England but stays cloudier and cooler. Showers will linger longer in northern areas and may pop up again in the afternoon for some. It’s certainly not a picture-perfect day, but it’s far from a total washout.

By Monday, cool air wins out — highs in the 40s and 50s, patchy drizzle, and a raw onshore breeze. We stay unsettled through at least Wednesday next week.

Heading to Fenway Park this weekend?
Friday afternoon looks good — just a few hit-or-miss showers to keep an eye on (mainly NW of the ballpark).
Saturday: warm and breezy with 70s and breaks of sun — chance of a shower/thunderstorm!
Sunday: cooler, cloudier, but mostly dry for the game.

We’ll have another update Saturday morning to fine-tune the timing. And don’t forget, you can always track the radar live in our free app — just hit “past + future” mode for the best view of what’s next.
