Friday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Improving Weather Ahead of Michaelmas & Weather Folklore

Noyes’ Notes started has its roots as “Matt’s Memo” from when Matt was on Boston TV, but what has always made it different is it’s not just “weather headlines” – it’s made for true weather enthusiasts.  Today is an example of that difference, as Matt covers Michaelmas this upcoming Sunday, the weather folklore behind it and the religious history tied to the day.  Meanwhile, 1°Outside Today always covers the next 24-hours, focused on a pleasant and mild Friday. National Meteorological Summary

Hurricane Helene is gradually weakening as it moves inland across the Southeastern United States. The system will bring heavy rain and the risk of life-threatening flash flooding through the Southern Appalachians today, with widespread flooding already reported across portions of Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. The storm will continue to track northwestward toward the Ohio Valley, merging with a low-pressure system over the weekend. By Saturday, rain and flood risks will shift toward the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, while the threat of severe thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic diminishes.

In the Western U.S., excessive heat remains a concern in Southeastern California and parts of the Desert Southwest. Temperatures will remain in the upper 90s to low 110s, with overnight lows in the 80s providing little relief. This heat is expected to persist through the weekend. A front moving into the Pacific Northwest will bring some light rain and cooler temperatures, though precipitation will taper off by the end of today.

Northeast Weather Story

New England and Upstate New York are set for a relatively quiet stretch of weather, as high pressure builds into the region, bringing dry and pleasant conditions through the weekend. This setup will follow the passage of a weak cold front today, which may bring isolated showers in the morning, particularly across southern New England. Any showers will dissipate by the afternoon, with skies clearing across much of the area. Highs will range from the upper 60s to mid-70s.

Saturday and Sunday will feature variable clouds and comfortable temperatures, with highs generally in the low to mid-70s. Morning fog is possible in the usual valleys, particularly in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, but this will quickly dissipate after sunrise. A steady easterly flow may keep some coastal areas slightly cooler, particularly in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where highs will remain in the upper 60s.

As Hurricane Helene’s remnants stay well to the south, any associated rain will miss New England. The next chance for showers will come early to middle of next week, as a low-pressure system moves in from the Midwest by Tuesday, with some uncertainty around the timing and intensity of rainfall. For now, the weekend offers ideal conditions for outdoor activities, travel, and marine interests, with calm winds and only moderate rip current risks along the coast.
