Happy Independence Day from all of us at 1DegreeOutside! As we celebrate this important weekend across New England, we’re keeping you ahead of the weather so you can plan with confidence. A comfortable air mass kicks off the holiday weekend, with drier air making for an absolutely beautiful July 4th and Saturday across the region. But don’t get too comfortable – heat and humidity make a return by Sunday and stick with us into next week, along with periodic chances for thunderstorms.
Much of what happens in our weather over the coming days is driven by the jet stream – the fast-moving river of air high in the sky that separates warm air to the south from cooler air to the north. On Wednesday, a jet stream disturbance triggered the thunderstorms many of us saw. And while that feature has moved out, new dips in the jet stream remain close enough to New England that we remain vulnerable to additional disturbances. These could bring isolated storms Sunday, a better chance of scattered storms Monday and especially Tuesday, and yet another round late next week, either Thursday or Friday.
As the pattern evolves, dew points – a key indicator of how humid the air feels – will begin to rise again starting Sunday. Our exclusive 14-day dew point forecast shows a stretch of muggy air from Sunday to Sunday, and it’s now available to all membership levels, including our “Fuel the Forecast” tier. If you’ve ever wondered what makes the air feel tropical versus comfortable, the dew point is the number to watch.
High pressure brings gorgeous weather through Saturday. If you haven’t seen our beach and boating forecast yet, be sure to check it out on our homepage and app – it’s loaded with the coastal and marine info you need and available right on our app and website. Looking into Sunday, the warmth and humidity return, and while the radar may not look too active at first glance, isolated thunderstorms could bubble up during the afternoon – mainly from the Berkshires east to Route 2 and into the Lakes Region. The storms should remain widely scattered, but they’re worth watching, especially if you’ll be outdoors or at a beach. If your town’s fireworks are Sunday night, you’re in luck – skies look clear and temperatures stay remarkably warm, still in the 80s in many spots even at 10 p.m.
Saturday’s highs will range from 75 to 85 degrees, with a cooling sea breeze expected near the coast. Overnight, humidity begins to return, especially along the South Coast. Sunday’s temperatures surge into the 90s for many, with feels-like values in the mid 90s. That sticky air also means a much milder night heading into Monday.
Monday’s forecast continues the trend of heat, with highs once again well into the 90s. Some scattered storms may pop up in central, western, and northern New England. But it’s Tuesday that looks to be the most unsettled of the next several days. As a cold front approaches, scattered thunderstorms are likely, and some could be strong to severe, especially in areas where the front stalls and interacts with humid air from the south.
If you’re on vacation next week, keep an eye on the 14-day forecast, available for free in the app. For those who want more, consider joining our 1DegreeOutside membership tiers for deeper insights and exclusive tools.
