This week brings a true autumn chill wrapping underneath a strong storm system pulling northeast and away from New England as Canadian high pressure builds in from the north and west. This new air comes with enough chill for frost to develop deep into Southern New England at midweek, while our first real dose of “upslope snow” is expected in the Northern and Western Mountains of New England. Matt Noyes has details on all of it in today’s Insights.
Windy Start to the Week, Frost on the Way
This Monday delivers gusty winds, picking up more for many of us during the late day into the night, ushering in cooler air across New England. As the week progresses, frost becomes likely for many, especially as winds calm down by Tuesday night into Wednesday. This cooler pattern is part of a broader dry stretch, and it looks like we won’t be seeing any big New England storms in the next week or two.
Gusty Winds to Start the Week
Winds will continue to strengthen into Monday evening, with gusts over 30 mph in spots like Boston, Worcester, and Providence. Though winds may prevent frost Monday night, the frost threat grows on Tuesday and Wednesday as the winds calm down. Expect chilly morning temperatures in the 30s across much of the region, with frost possible in sheltered valleys and areas like Rutland, MA, and Great Barrington.
Snow in the Mountains
Exciting news for skiers and snowboarders, not so much because of the amounts rather than the representation of the heralding of snow sports season getting ever-closer: upslope snow is expected in the Green and White Mountains. As the west and northwest winds push moist air up the mountain slopes, some highest summits could accumulate several inches of snow, while valleys will see less. Matt has full details with the valley and summit snow prediction map in the video.
Cooler Days Ahead
Tuesday and Wednesday will bring highs in the 40s for northern New England and 50s further south. Frost will likely expand into more areas by Wednesday night, even reaching the suburbs south of Boston. A freeze is possible in locations like Fitchburg and Keene, with temperatures dipping into the upper 20s in some spots.
Looking Ahead
The cool air sticks around through Thursday, but as we approach the weekend, temperatures will warm up, bringing relief from the chilly conditions. Stay tuned for more updates in the Pattern Predictions video and the latest forecasts using Noyes’ 1DegreeOutside Weather app.
