Wednesday Insights: Snow Shifts from New England Mountains to Rockies, Warmth Ahead

A major weather pattern shift is in the making with a deep “trough,” or dip in the jet stream with cool air in New England being replaced by a strong “ridge” of high pressure, chock full of warmth for the weekend into next week, but preceded by wind on the north side of an ocean storm and some coastal splashover.  Matt Noyes sums up the recent snow – double digit snow reported at one New England ski summit – and looks to what lay ahead through the weekend in Insights.

Mountain Snowfall Update
While Danielle and I are on the road, we’re still bringing you all the latest weather updates. Winter sports enthusiasts will love this—mountain snow season has officially begun. We’ve already seen up to 10 inches of snow at Sugarbush and snow has accumulated at ski resorts like Loon Mountain. The photos from the ski areas showcase beautiful “snow-liage,” combining snow and fall foliage. Meanwhile, the western U.S. will experience accumulating snow in the Rockies in the coming days.

A Mild and Dry Stretch
Here in New England, we’re looking ahead to a stretch of dry and mild weather. As high pressure builds over the Northeast, temperatures will rise into the 60s and 70s as we head into the weekend. That warmth will stick around into early next week as well. Thursday and Friday may bring some gusty winds, especially along the Cape and coastal areas, with gusts over 30 mph in some spots. However, after a frosty start, the wind will ease by the weekend, allowing temperatures to climb.

Coastal Flooding Risk & Supermoon
As the winds pick up along the coast, we’ll need to keep an eye out for splashover and perhaps just a touch of minor coastal flooding during Thursday and Friday’s high tide cycles, especially with the added influence of a supermoon. While the rain will remain off the coast, the breeze will be noticeable in southeastern New England.

The Tropics Aren’t Done Yet
In the tropics, there are two areas of interest—one approaching Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic with a 40% chance of development, and another near Central America with a 20% chance. Conditions are becoming more favorable for tropical development as we move into the weekend and next week, so we’ll keep you posted on any potential activity.

Looking Ahead
By Friday, highs will reach around 60 degrees, and by Saturday, temperatures will climb to 65-70°F. Sunday and Monday will bring even warmer weather, with highs pushing into the 70s across much of New England.
