Matt Noyes opens the week with our customary “meteorological deep-dive,” looking through week’s end at our near-record warmth now, building brush fire danger, Tropical Storm Oscar and some waves that may head toward New England and a big change in air by week’s end. It’s all in today’s Insights video!
Today’s Weather Highlights
- Record-breaking temperatures: Many regions in southern New England may flirt with or even surpass old records set as far back as 1920. Boston, Worcester, and Providence are some of the locations with potential record highs, ranging from 76 to 82 degrees.
- Elevated brush fire danger: With dry weather and gusty winds up to 25 mph, conditions are ripe for an increase in brush fire risk across New England, particularly through midweek.
- Looking ahead: Expect a mild start to the week, but changes are on the horizon. By Wednesday night, a cold front will sweep through, bringing cooler temperatures and a chance for a few quick showers by early Thursday morning.
Tropical Watch: Oscar and Atlantic Swell
Tropical Storm Oscar, currently near the Bahamas, is not expected to impact New England directly with rain. However, it may generate some larger ocean swells by late this week. Though the storm is not expected to intensify rapidly due to increased wind shear, be on the lookout for higher waves along the eastern coast later this week.
Day-by-Day Forecast
- Monday (Today): Challenging record highs with temperatures around 75 to 80 degrees in most areas. A gusty wind and dry air raise the brush fire danger.
- Tuesday: Temperatures continue in the mid-to-upper 70s, but a slight onshore breeze will cool things down along the coast, keeping coastal temperatures in the 60s.
- Wednesday: Winds from the south strengthen, leading to another warm day in the 70s, with an increased risk of brush fires due to dry air. Late Wednesday night, a cold front brings a quick shower and a significant temperature drop.
- Thursday: Cooler air arrives. Highs near 50 in northern New England and around 60 in the south. Expect brisk winds from the northwest, bringing a classic fall feel.
- Friday: Another cool day with highs in the 50s to 60s. Overnight frost returns, particularly in northern and western New England.
- Saturday: Potential for a passing shower. Stay tuned for updates in our 14-day forecast on the 1DegreeOutside app.
Marine Forecast & Wave Watch
- Tuesday: Calm seas with waves around 1-2 feet.
- Wednesday: Winds pick up out of the south, increasing seas to 2-4 feet.
- Thursday: A combination of winds from the northwest and ocean swells from Oscar lead to higher seas, ranging from 3-6 feet along the eastern waters.
