So often the weather pattern across the country can resemble a see-saw, and that’s the case this week as a storm entering the Pacific Northwest strengthens over the Central United States and delivers cold and snow behind it, with record-challenging warmth ahead of it, including here in New England. Matt Noyes has all the details on the next several days, including Halloween and Election Day forecasts, in “Insights” – our deep-dive into meteorology and the forecast!
Snowflakes to Start and Transition to Record Heat
The day started with the season’s first snowflakes in areas like Manchester, New Hampshire, down to Amesbury and Newburyport, Massachusetts. Light but noticeable, the snow came from a disturbance that combined cold air and a jet stream level front. Here’s how the weather transitions:
- Early Week Cold: Overnight lows will drop into the teens and twenties across New England, 30s south, supporting widespread frost and freeze.
- Warmup Technically Starts Tuesday: Southerly winds kick in by Tuesday, with highs around 55-60 degrees and a few isolated coastal showers or drizzle possible in the morning.
- Fire Risk Alert: Persistent dry conditions keep brush fire danger elevated. Many areas have burn bans, and the lack of recent rain has left the landscape primed for fire risks. Please be cautious with outdoor burning.
Halloween Warmth
New England faces a sudden flip to near record-breaking temperatures on Halloween. Expect highs near or above 80 degrees in many areas:
- Tuesday Evening Showers: Overnight, warmer air pushes in with scattered showers across the region. This will help to ease the brush fire danger a bit.
- Halloween Warmth: Morning clouds break up, giving way to sunshine and balmy highs. Many areas may even set new records.
- Halloween Night: Even as temperatures drop slightly, the evening should remain around 70 degrees for a comfortable trick-or-treating experience.
Late Week Cold Front and Weekend Outlook
The warmth will be short-lived. A cold front on Thursday night into Friday brings showers, shifting to cooler, fall-like weather by the weekend:
- Friday Showers: Expect scattered showers, mainly in the morning, as the cold front passes.
- Weekend Temperatures: Highs in the 50s with dry weather across the region. A true fall feel returns, ideal for outdoor activities.
Election Day and Extended Forecast
Looking to Election Day (next Tuesday), showers may start in the morning, but drier weather should settle in later:
- Election Day Forecast: Currently, a 55% chance of morning showers, with clearing likely by the afternoon.
- Mid-November Cool Down: After Election Day, the 14-day outlook shows a cooler trend, with daytime highs around 50 degrees by mid-next week in a more classic late fall pattern.
