Tuesday Insights: As Brush Fires Burn, Some Rain Relief…But Increasing Wind

With brush fires burning in New England, any rain is welcome.  Matt Noyes says we do have some on the way tonight, with highest amounts expected in Northern New England, but winds will also turn gusty the next two nights as the air changes in New England.  Eventually, the new air will mean record-challenging high temperatures on Halloween Thursday before a cold front brings returning cool and dry fall air for the weekend.  Matt has all the details in our video here, written summary below.

Elevated Fire Danger Across New England

Brush fires have challenged local fire crews, especially on the North Shore, as dry conditions persist.  The wind will increase overnight Tuesday and Wednesday night, though incoming showers will help.

  • Tuesday Night: South-southeast winds will bring slightly more humidity as showers fall, helping to curb fire risk slightly. But gusts may reach 30 mph briefly overnight, and wind of that nature is never helpful.
  • Wednesday Night: Another increase in wind with gusts over 20 mph is expected from the south.
  • Thursday Evening: Winds will increase again ahead of a cold front, shifting to a breezy west-northwest direction by Friday.

Safety Note: Burn bans are in place in several communities, and it’s essential to avoid open burning and be mindful of any potential fire hazards.

Limited Precipitation At Home, Snowfall out west

The dry pattern continues for most of New England, with only light showers forecast midweek.

  • Tuesday Night Showers: Showers moving from west to east tonight will deliver up to half an inch of rain in northern New England, with 0.1 to 0.2 inches expected in southern parts. This rainfall should help briefly moisten dry areas.
  • Thursday Night Showers: A cold front on Thursday night may bring additional light showers, but totals will likely be minimal.

Meanwhile, significant snow is falling across the Rockies, with parts of Wyoming and Colorado expecting up to 18 inches. This Western snowfall indicates the colder air building in the nation’s midsection, though New England remains out of its reach for now.

Temperature Outlook: Record-Challenging Warmth on Halloween

Prepare for a warm Halloween, with temperatures nearing record highs.

  • Wednesday: Highs in the low 70s across much of New England.
  • Halloween (Thursday): Highs around 80 degrees, with records generally ranging from 79 to 82 in many locations. Expect a blend of sun and clouds.
  • Friday: Temperatures drop to near 70 degrees (cooler north) as cooler air starts moving in after morning showers.
  • Weekend Outlook: Saturday and Sunday will feature a return to crisp, fall air, with daytime highs in the 50s and overnight lows dipping into the 30s, making for a classic New England fall weekend.

14-Day Outlook

After Halloween’s warmth and the cooler weekend, New England’s temperatures should moderate for the following week, bringing seasonable conditions to the region with highs generally in the 50s, though a return of some warmth to the 60s or even around 70 is likely next Wednesday.
