Matt Noyes gives us a peek at what the Western U.S. is dealing with, from near-90 mph wind gusts to three feet of snow, while, of course, focusing on our upcoming weather here in New England from increasing brush fire spread conditions to our weekend forecast and two chances for rain ahead. It’s all in our meteorology deep-dive: the Insights video!
As we step into Thursday, cooler air is gradually settling across the region, with temperatures beginning a steady descent toward seasonable, crisp autumn conditions by the weekend. Today, winds remain breezy with gusts topping 20 mph, but by Friday, we’ll experience stronger gusts of 25-40 mph, increasing brush fire spread risks. Southwestern winds will shift to the northwest as a cold front approaches Friday evening, adding to the dry air influx.
Expect a slight uptick in precipitation on Friday late day and evening in the mountains of northern New England, as rain showers transition into snow showers. Valleys may not see much accumulation, but the higher peaks, especially in the Presidentials, could receive up to two inches of snowfall with elevation. Following this front, southern New England temperatures will dip to around 60°F, with chillier readings north.
High pressure brings a generally dry and fair weekend. Here’s what to expect:
By Sunday evening, rain showers associated with a small portion of Tropical Storm Rafael’s moisture will move into the area. Although Rafael is shifting westward and lingering in the Gulf, it’s carrying a ribbon of tropical moisture that’ll briefly sweep over New England. Expect about a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rainfall by Monday morning, though some will see even less, as Matt shows in the rain forecast map in the video.
Rafael, originally projected to approach the Louisiana coast, is now expected to stall over the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend. Rafael may not bring a direct impact to our area, but it will continue to supply moisture to the Southeast and could affect our next rain chance around Thursday next week.
