The storm center is developing over southern New England today, and its impacts will vary dramatically based on elevation and location. Snow is already falling in higher terrain across northern and western New England, while freezing rain is creating slick spots in parts of north-central Massachusetts. Farther south and east, it’s mainly rain.
Expect precipitation to continue expanding through midday, with snowfall intensifying across the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The heaviest precipitation will occur late morning into early afternoon before tapering in intensity during the evening. By 6 to 9 PM, much of southern New England will see precipitation wind down, but northern Maine will continue to receive snow into the overnight hours.
See the video for the map!! This storm’s snowfall is highly elevation-dependent. Lower valleys like the Champlain Valley and Connecticut River Valley will see minimal accumulation, but areas above 1,000 feet in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine will receive significant totals:
In southern New England, this is primarily a rain event. Totals will range from 0.5 to 1 inch, with locally higher amounts in heavy downpours. Winds will be gusty today, especially along the coast, with gusts up to 40 mph on Cape Cod and coastal Massachusetts (eventually right up the coast of Maine this evening). While roads may be slick tonight as temperatures dip near freezing, gusty winds will dry most surfaces, reducing the likelihood of widespread icing.
As the storm exits late tonight, drier but cool air will move in for Friday. Highs will rebound to the 40s in southern New England, while the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire could see snow showers on the western slopes of the Greens on Saturday. For the weekend travelers, Sunday is shaping up to be a generally quiet day across New England.
Happy Thanksgiving, and stay safe!
