Wednesday Insights: Snow Tonight, Arctic Blast This Weekend, Some Friday Light Snow Potential

Matt Noyes says Ski and Snowmobile Country pick up new snow tonight, while the rest of us *may* get enough ocean moisture for some light accumulation Friday into Friday night as a storm strengthens offshore.  The bigger and more widespread impact will be the hearty shot of cold arriving behind that storm this weekend.  Matt also explains why some snow showers on Christmas Day aren’t impossible given the extended pattern.

Overview

The weather pattern stays active with:

  1. Snow Tonight: Northern New England sees accumulating snow; rain dominates farther south.
  2. Friday Night Snow Potential: An onshore wind may deliver 1–3” of snow to parts of eastern New England.
  3. Weekend Arctic Blast: Single-digit highs in the north, teens to low 20s elsewhere, and subzero lows overnight.

Snowfall Amounts

  • Northern New England: 2–6 inches; highest totals in the Presidentials, Greens, and high terrain of northwest Maine.
  • Southern New England: Coating to an inch in northern Worcester County and Berkshires, locally 2 inches in the hills. Most of the rest of us see rain.

Friday Snow Potential

A developing ocean storm will track south and east of New England, but an onshore wind may bring rain and snow showers Friday afternoon, transitioning to all snow showers Friday evening. Potential snowfall: 1–3 inches in parts of eastern Massachusetts and coastal Maine.

Weekend Arctic Blast

  • Saturday: Snow showers exit, and cold air pours in.
  • Sunday: Highs only in the teens north and low 20s south, with subzero lows overnight.
  • Wind Chills: Near zero across much of the region.
