It won’t be a blockbuster, but Matt Noyes says at least some snow is likely to fall for much of New England Friday, Friday night and at least some snow showers the first part of Saturday as an energetic disturbance creates an offshore storm. While the brunt of that storm misses New England, increasingly cold air will interact with an onshore flow to create pockets of snow showers during the day Friday that will continue as temperatures drop Friday night. Plus, Matt looks at ocean-effect snow potential on Cape Cod and the pattern through the holiday week next week – all in the video!
Friday Snow Details
- Timing:
- Light snow showers develop Friday morning, blowing on off the ocean during the day in fits and starts, mixed with raindrops near the coast, then becoming steadier by late day and evening and transitioning more to snowflakes.
- By Friday night, colder air will flip mixed precipitation to snow from north to south.
- Snowfall Totals:
- Generally 1-3″ for Eastern MA, highest amounts away from the coast, less along the South Shore.
- 2-4″ possible in spots that see with ocean-effect enhancement in localized bands.
- Coating to 1″ expected on Cape Cod and the South Shore due to warmer temperatures.
- Impacts:
- Slick roads Friday afternoon for some, expanding during evening and overnight.
- Snow may linger into early Saturday morning before clearing.
Arctic Blast This Weekend
The coldest air of the season arrives Saturday night:
- Saturday Highs Not Bad: 20s north, 30s south.
- Sunday Highs: 10-15 north, near 20 south.
- Wind Chills Sunday:
- Single digits south of Boston.
- Below zero north, with wind chills near -10° in parts of northern New England.
Christmas Week Snow Chances
We’re watching closely for:
- Christmas Eve-Day into Christmas: A jet stream disturbance may bring snow showers to New England, unlikely to be big.
- Late Week Storm: A more significant system could bring rain or snow to parts of the region for the last weekend of 2024.
