Weekend Insights: Wind Eases, Winter Air Sticks and We Look All the Way Beyond NEXT Weekend!

Our Weekend Edition will be out Saturday morning, as usual, but our Insights is that deeper dive into meteorology we love to bring you, explaining why the forecast is the way it is and what the science is that’s driving the predictions.  Matt Noyes delivers that close inspection today, showing why the chances for precipitation increase starting around midweek and especially next weekend.

Saturday: Winter Sunshine

Enjoy a mostly quiet day with bright sunshine in the morning and increasing clouds for some by the afternoon.

  • Highs: 20s across most areas.
  • Wind: Light breeze, making it feel like classic winter weather.

Sunday: Snow Showers & Warmer Temps

Sunday brings a mix of milder air and snow showers:

  • Morning: Snow showers develop as soon as predawn in some of Northern and Western New England, then expand, bringing light accumulations to the mountains.
  • Afternoon: Highs climb to 35-40 degrees with gusty southwest winds (25-30 mph). The breeze brings wind chills in the 20s.
  • Southern New England: A spotty rain or snow shower is possible as a cold front moves through.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

  • Monday: Quiet and seasonal.
  • Tuesday: Snow squalls in the mountains, with a chance of a rain or snow shower reaching Southern New England later in the day.
  • Wednesday: A stronger disturbance could bring snow to parts of New England if southern moisture joins the northern jet stream.

Pattern Shift Next Weekend

As the jet stream realigns, a deep southwest flow could bring warmth and moisture into the region.

  • Impacts: About half of the current forecast models suggest rain instead of snow for Southern New England by next weekend, though cold air and snowpack could hold on.
  • Takeaway: A more active weather pattern begins next weekend and continues into early February, with higher chances for precipitation each day.
