After a stretch of high winds and bitter cold, the next system will graze southeastern New England late Thursday into early Friday, bringing light snow mainly to the South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands. Meanwhile, northern New England stays quiet, with some snow showers possible in the mountains.
While the storm’s core remains well south of New England, a slight shift northward could increase snowfall amounts. As of now, the best chance for an inch or two of accumulation exists from the South Shore through the Cape and Islands. A separate weak disturbance will also bring light snow showers to Vermont, western Massachusetts, and northern New Hampshire Thursday night, adding a dusting to an inch (or two) in spots.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a weekend without a storm, but this one looks to break the pattern. Both Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be seasonably cold but calm, with highs in the 20s north and low-to-mid 30s south. While a bit of a breeze will persist, especially on Cape Cod, it won’t be nearly as strong as earlier in the week.
For winter sports lovers, this weekend is a great chance to enjoy the fresh snow in the mountains without worrying about travel issues.
Next week, we start to see signs of a slow pattern shift. While temperatures remain below average, they moderate slightly, and by late February, a more active pattern may return. Could March bring renewed storm chances? Check out Matt’s thoughts in Pattern Predictions!
