Thursday Insights:
Clouds Cooperate for Eclipse Viewing in Parts of New England

A total lunar eclipse will grace the sky overnight tonight, but for New Englanders hoping to catch a glimpse of the “Blood Moon,” the biggest question is: will the clouds clear in time?

The eclipse starts with a partial phase at 1 a.m. and reaches totality from 2:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. before wrapping up at 5 a.m. Unfortunately, cloud cover remains an issue for some. The best chance for clearing skies is across western and northern New England. Areas along the coast of Maine, southeast New Hampshire, and much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut may remain too cloudy to see much of the event. However, there’s a small chance of breaks in central New England—so keep an eye out!

If you do get a view, we’d love to see it! Use the “Send to Us” tab in our 1DegreeOutside Weather App to submit your eclipse photos.

Weekend Weather Changes – Warm, But Wild

Temperatures will soar well into the 50s Saturday and 60s by Sunday, making for a mild but cloudy weekend. A few stray showers could develop, especially in western and northern New England Sunday, but most of the weekend remains dry.

The bigger concern? Strong winds and heavy rain arriving late Sunday into Monday.

🌬️ Wind Gusts:

  • Sunday morning: 15-25 mph
  • Sunday afternoon: 40-50 mph
  • Sunday night: South Coast & Cape Cod may see gusts over 60 mph

These winds, combined with soaking rain, could lead to isolated power outages and localized flooding in southeastern New England. The heaviest rain arrives overnight Sunday into Monday morning, with ½ to 1 inch of rain for most, but possibly 1-2 inches in southeastern Massachusetts.
