Monday 1°Outside Insights: Showers Ahead This Week

This week’s weather in New England will be unsettled, yet rainfall totals are unlikely to make a significant dent in the recent dry spell for most – the greatest exceptions being in parts of Northern New England and the Islands of Massachusetts.  Matt Noyes delivers the meteorology behind the forecast through week’s end in today’s Insights video – written post below, as usual with our Insights!

Sliding Back into Humidity

Tonight:

  • Clouds and Humidity: Clouds are spreading back into our area, signaling an increase in humidity. A stalled front to our south is currently holding back the bulk of the humidity, but that will change as a wave of low-pressure moves in.
  • Pop-Up Showers and Storms: Expect widely scattered showers and thunderstorms later Monday and Monday evening, though the greatest chance for rain is after midnight into the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday.

Tuesday:

  • Morning Rain: A slug of rain will impact most of us by Tuesday morning, starting to taper off by midday.
  • Onshore Winds and Cooler Temperatures: As the low-pressure center moves by, onshore winds will bring slightly cooler but still humid conditions, keeping high temperatures around 80°F.
  • Afternoon Showers: There’s a 60% chance of pop-up showers or storms during the afternoon.  Still, two-day rain totals Monday and Tuesday will be limited for many, with the best chance of around three-quarters of an inch in parts of Northern New England, and perhaps over an inch on Nantucket.

Midweek Forecast

Wednesday:

  • Periodic Showers: Expect pockets of showers and drizzle throughout the day, with an easterly wind off the ocean keeping conditions moist.
  • Cool and Humid: Highs will be in the 70s, but it will feel muggy with dew points around 70°F.

Thursday:

  • Cold Front Arrival: A cold front will slice into the humidity, triggering showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Highs will reach into the 80s.

Friday:

  • More Comfortable Air: The cold front will bring in drier, more comfortable air, with highs in the 80s and a reduced chance of showers.

Looking Ahead

Our 14-day dew point forecast shows a drop in humidity by the upcoming weekend.  While we expect a more typical New England pattern of ups and downs, we are not done with the heat yet as we move into August.
