Monday Insights: 70s the Rest of this Week, Localized Flooding

It will be a bit of an unsettled stretch through midweek with areas of rain from time to time as a frontal boundary slides through the region then slows and stalls out nearby. That also means an increased risk of localized flooding. Danielle breaks down the details in the video or written form below.

Tropical System Debby

Debby is currently moving over Northern Florida and is expected to lift northeastward off the Southeast Georgia coastline by this time tomorrow. We need to keep a close eye on Debby, as some of her leftover moisture could impact portions of far southern New England by the end of the week.

Forecast Details

  • Tonight and Tomorrow: Showers will linger into the evening as the cold front sliding through slows and stalls out. This sets the stage for more rain developing tomorrow night into Wednesday morning as another wave of low pressure moves by. The atmosphere is very moist, so any thunderstorms and downpours that do develop will be slow movers. This increases the risk of localized flash flooding in southern New England, particularly Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday: We should get drier for the second half of Wednesday as a weak area of high pressure moves in. There may be a lingering shower along the South Coast.
  • Thursday: Looks mainly dry, but by later in the day, some of Debby’s (remnant) outer moisture bands could bring rainfall back to southern New England, especially late Thursday into Friday.

Severe Weather Threat

For Tuesday, there’s an isolated threat of severe thunderstorms in Southwestern New England, generally from New York City down to Philly and back into Pennsylvania. It’s nothing widespread, but a few rumbles of thunder are possible.

Temperature Outlook

Today is the hottest day of the next couple of weeks. With an onshore wind and slightly less humid air:

  • Tomorrow: Highs in the 70s, with 50s tomorrow night in northern New England and generally 60-65 in southern New England. Pockets of rain and heavier downpours could lead to localized flooding tomorrow night into early Wednesday.
  • Wednesday: Highs only in the low 70s, so we don’t rebound much in the afternoon. Northern New England will see mid to upper 70s with more sunshine.
  • Thursday: Mid to upper 70s. Variable cloud cover with potential moisture sliding back into southern New England late in the day.
