Monday Insights: Drought Areas Won’t Improve This Week

Matt Noyes says while a sprinkle is possible Tuesday, a shower Wednesday and perhaps a few Saturday, none of it is fed by deep atmospheric moisture, so none of it will make a dent in the drought conditions that continue for some of New England.

Topsfield Fair: Opening Week Looks Fantastic

We’re just days away from the start of the Topsfield Fair on October 4th, and the weather looks great for opening day and the first week. Expect mid-70s and dry conditions on Friday, making it perfect for fairgoers.

While there’s an elevated chance of showers on Saturday, these will be quick-moving disturbances and shouldn’t linger, meaning we should stay optimistic for weekend plans until the exact timing of that Saturday disturbance becomes clearer.  Heading into early next week, we could see another round of quick showers on Monday night into Tuesday morning, but overall, the forecast is ideal for enjoying all the fair has to offer.

Drought Conditions Persist in Parts of New England

Despite the fair-weather outlook, New England could still use some rain. Parts of central New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Seacoast, and northeastern Massachusetts remain in drought, with rainfall deficits of 2-3 inches below normal over the past 30 days. While southeast Massachusetts saw plenty of rain from the nor’easter a few weeks ago, most other areas have been dry. Springfield, for example, has only received 12% of its normal rainfall for the month.

The upcoming weather pattern continues to favor dry conditions, so while it’s great for outdoor plans, the drought will likely persist in the short term.

Midweek Clouds and Isolated Showers

Looking at the forecast for this week, Tuesday brings cloudy skies with a sprinkle possible due to an onshore wind bringing in ocean moisture. These lower altitude clouds will stick around for most of the day, keeping temperatures in the 60s.

By Wednesday, a cold front approaches from the north and west, but it’s expected to weaken significantly before reaching New England. This means only a slight chance of an isolated shower—mostly in northern New England. For the rest of the region, expect cloudy skies and temperatures in the 60s, with minimal rain.

Sunshine Returns Late Week

The weather improves significantly by the end of the week, with Thursday bringing back full sunshine and temperatures over 70°F. Friday will be even milder, with a southwest wind pushing temperatures into the mid-70s—ideal conditions for the Topsfield Fair kickoff!

If you’re planning to head outdoors on Saturday, keep an eye on the chance of a passing shower, but even if we do get some rain, it should clear quickly. The northwesterly flow in the upper atmosphere will help keep things moving along, similar to what we’ll see on Wednesday. Most of us can expect dry weather throughout the weekend.
