Monday Insights: Humidity On the Rise, Showers & Storms Midweek

As low pressure lifts north and departs the Northeast, our next disturbance moves in through midweek, bringing a surge in humidity and numerous showers and thunderstorms, mainly on Wednesday. Danielle dives into the details over the next few days in this insights video, or if you prefer to read about the forecast, we’ve got you covered below!

Recent Rainfall

Over the past 24 hours, we’ve had some rain across southern New England. Estimated totals range from a quarter to half an inch, with some spots in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and near Nantucket seeing up to an inch. This is due to a low-pressure system that Matt discussed this morning, which has been retrograding back towards us. This system will lose its grip on New England today as upper-level energy lifts northward into Eastern Canada.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

Looking at the upper-level pattern, the yellows and oranges indicate energy in the atmosphere. We’ll see a break in the action tomorrow. However, an additional trough will approach the Northeast on Wednesday and shift offshore by Thursday.  In turn, Wednesday will have the highest risk of wet weather this week, with numerous showers and thunderstorms bubbling up, along with increased humidity.

  • Tuesday: Isolated showers or thunderstorms possible.
  • Wednesday: Most unsettled day of the week with numerous showers and thunderstorms. It won’t be raining all day, but it’s advisable to keep wet weather gear handy.
  • Thursday: An isolated shower or storm may linger in the morning with some clouds, but breaks of sunshine are expected later, making it a decent day overall.
  • Friday: Increasing clouds with a chance of showers or storms, especially in Western New England by the evening.

Precipitation Chances

  • Tuesday: Highest chance (40-50%) in far southwestern and northern New England. Mostly dry for central and southern New England.
  • Wednesday: High chance (70-90%) of precipitation across the region. The wettest periods will be in the morning and afternoon, with a reduction in activity by the evening.
  • Thursday: Lower chance (30-50%) of a quick shower or isolated thunderstorm in northern New England. Not widespread.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Tuesday: Highs in the 80s with increasing humidity.
  • Tuesday Night: Lows in the 60s to lower 70s, making for an uncomfortable night for sleeping.
  • Wednesday: Highs around 80 degrees, with winds out of the south bringing in humid air. Dew points will be in the 70s, making it a sticky day.
  • Thursday: Hot with highs in the 80s to lower 90s. Humidity remains in place, leading to a hot stretch likely lasting through the upcoming weekend.

We’ll discuss the next couple of weeks in more detail in our Pattern Predictions video. Have a great day!
