The frequent incursion of northern jet stream energy means cold air aloft for bubbling clouds and showers with thunder from time to time, but also means New England is relatively protected from the tropics, says Matt Noyes in today’s deep dive into meteorology.
Over the last 24 hours, we’ve seen some showers in Northern New England, which were expected as part of a jet stream disturbance moving through the region. Today, we can anticipate more scattered showers and even a thunderstorm this afternoon as the jet stream level energy remains over us. However, these showers will be widely scattered, so not everyone will see significant rainfall.
As we move into Tuesday, the jet stream disturbance relaxes, leading to a really pleasant day with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures around 80 degrees. This break in the weather will make Tuesday a great day to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.
By Wednesday, we’ll start to see a slight increase in shower chances, especially in Northern New England, where some showers and thunderstorms could develop later in the day and into the evening. Thursday brings a more pronounced increase in shower activity as more jet stream energy moves overhead, raising the chance of showers across the region.
In the tropics, we’re monitoring the potential development of Tropical Storm Ernesto. Currently, it looks like Ernesto will bring tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain to areas like Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. However, thanks to the jet stream energy over our region, we currently expect Ernesto to recurve back out to sea, keeping its impact away from New England.
