New England is gearing up for a return to wintry weather as cold air filters in behind the latest storm system. Here’s what to expect in the coming days, from snow in the mountains to cold mornings and the next chance for rain and snow.
Mountain Snow Accumulation
The cold air filtering in behind today’s storm is setting the stage for additional snow in the mountains.
- Lake-Effect Snow: Strong west-southwest winds will bring lake-effect snow bands that will extend to the Green Mountains of Vermont and enhanced upslope snow showers. Accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected in the Berkshires, with 4-8 inches likely along the spine of the Greens (highest totals at the summits) and general 2-4″ with elevation from the NE Kingdom to parts of the White Mountains too.
- Snow Timing: Most of the snow will fall tonight into early Thursday, tapering off during the day.
Cold and Blustery Days Ahead
- Thursday and Friday: Highs will only reach the 30s in southern New England and 20s in the north, with wind gusts 25-35 mph on Thursday making it feel around 10 degrees colder.
- Overnight Lows: Expect widespread teens and 20s Thursday night, with single-digit readings possible in the far North Country.
Weekend Outlook
- Saturday: A sunny but cold day, with highs in the low 30s for most of New England. Winds will be lighter, offering a break from the recent blustery conditions.
- Sunday: Clouds will increase ahead of the next system, which could bring rain and snow showers Sunday night into Monday – so stay tuned. Temperatures moderate slightly with highs ranging from the 30s in the north to the lower 40s south.
