National Weather Summary
An active weather pattern continues to impact the United States, with notable features including an atmospheric river event in the Pacific Northwest, a warm and relatively quiet period across the central and eastern U.S., and colder temperatures in the northern Plains.
- Pacific Northwest: A potent atmospheric river will bring periods of heavy rain to coastal areas of Washington and Oregon, with significant snow in the higher elevations of the Cascades. Snow levels will rise above 7,000 feet during the most intense precipitation, transitioning snow to rain in many higher elevations. Rainfall totals through Wednesday morning may reach 5 to 7+ inches in the Olympics, with moderate flooding risks in low-lying areas and potential impacts to travel.
- Northern Plains and Upper Midwest: A weak frontal system will bring light snow to portions of the Dakotas and Minnesota, with accumulations generally less than 2 inches. Temperatures across the region will remain 5 to 15 degrees below average, with highs struggling to climb above the teens in some areas.
- Central and Eastern U.S.: A pair of cold fronts will generate scattered rain showers from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast. Florida will experience locally heavy rain along the eastern coastline as anomalous moisture flows northward from the Caribbean. Warm conditions persist elsewhere, with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal, particularly in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.
- West Coast and High Plains: A ridge of high pressure dominates the West, allowing for mild conditions in the High Plains, with highs 10 to 20 degrees above average. A continuation of above-normal warmth may challenge daily high temperature records in parts of California and Nevada.
Northeast Weather Story
Mild and damp conditions will prevail across the Northeast today, with early rain tapering.
- Morning Hours: A warm front will lift northward, bringing widespread rain across New England and New York State through early to mid morning. The heaviest rain will fall along and east of the Hudson River Valley. Fog may reduce visibility in some areas, particularly across interior valleys and near the coastline.
- Afternoon into Evening: Aside from a lingering shower, a gradual decrease in clouds is anticipated. Highs will range from the upper 40s in northern Vermont and New Hampshire to the mid-50s along coastal areas of southern New England.
- Wind and Temperature Trends: Winds will be breezy, especially along the coast, with gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm during the day before cooler air filters in overnight.
- Looking Ahead: By Wednesday, another low-pressure system will approach the region, bringing the potential for rain and a wintry mix in the interior. While snow accumulation is not expected in major metropolitan areas, northern New England will see measurable snowfall.
