Pattern Predictions: Increased Snow Chances Ahead for Late January

If you’ve been waiting for a more traditional New England winter pattern, the next two weeks may deliver. A shift in the jet stream starting this weekend will bring storms closer to New England, increasing the chance for snow and precipitation.

For the past several weeks, the jet stream has been locked south of New England, keeping most storms and moisture deflected away from the region. This week, the cold air relaxes, allowing the jet stream to shift north.

What to Expect Starting This Weekend

By the weekend, disturbances will travel closer to New England, bringing two possible storm chances:

  1. Saturday into Sunday: A cold front may spawn a storm along its boundary, with the potential for a wintry mix in southern areas and snow farther north.
  2. Early Next Week: A second storm may develop along the front, increasing the chance for accumulating snow, particularly if colder air locks into place.

While these storms may not be blockbusters, they mark the beginning of a more active pattern that could last at least a couple of weeks.

For now, temperatures will fluctuate, with milder air possible this weekend ahead of the first storm. Afterward, a colder pattern takes hold, increasing the likelihood of snow with future disturbances. Meteorologists will be on high alert for storm development, and we recommend staying tuned for updates as we get closer to the weekend.
