Tuesday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: “Can I Wear Shorts?”

This week, New England gets a break from the winter chill as temperatures climb into the 40s and 50s—a stark contrast from last week’s deep cold! But before you break out the shorts (like Danielle & Matt’s 7-year-old wanted to!), keep in mind that cold air returns this weekend and morning refreeze may cause slick spots each day. Full details on the next 24 hours including a snow accumulation map and how much rani to expect in the video. Read on for the National and Northeast weather summaries.

National Meteorological Summary

A milder pattern continues across much of the country today as temperatures remain above normal for most areas east of the Rockies. Highs in the 50s and 60s are expected across the central U.S., with 40s returning to the Northeast. Even in the South, temperatures will rise into the 60s and low 70s, marking a notable contrast to the deep freeze earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest remains active, with an atmospheric river event continuing to bring heavy rain and mountain snow to the region. Another 1-3 inches of rainfall is expected in coastal Washington and Oregon, with the potential for localized flooding. The Cascades and northern Rockies will continue to receive several feet of snow at higher elevations, making for hazardous mountain travel.

In the Southeast, showers and thunderstorms continue over Florida, where locally heavy rain may lead to urban flooding. The system responsible for this rain will shift eastward, allowing drier conditions to return by Wednesday.

A quick-moving clipper system will bring scattered rain and snow showers from the Great Lakes into the interior Northeast today and tonight, but accumulations will be minor. Another storm system will bring widespread rain and mountain snow to the Northeast by midweek, followed by colder air returning late in the week.

Looking ahead, a more unsettled pattern will take hold by the weekend, with multiple disturbances bringing chances for rain and snow across the Northeast and Great Lakes. Temperatures will trend downward by the weekend, with another shot of colder air likely by early next week.

Northeast Weather Story

A mild and mostly cloudy day is in store across New England and Upstate New York as southerly winds bring in warmer air ahead of an approaching cold front. Highs will reach into the mid to upper 40s across southern New England, with upper 30s to low 40s in the interior and northern areas.

A clipper system will bring scattered rain and snow showers this afternoon and evening, mainly across Vermont, northern New York, and northern New England. Any snow accumulation will be minor (generally a dusting to an inch in the higher elevations), and valleys will see mainly rain or a mix of rain and wet snow.

By Tuesday night, the front will move through, bringing clearing skies and slightly cooler temperatures overnight. Lows will range from the upper 20s in the north to the mid-30s along the coast. Some patchy fog may develop in areas that receive rainfall, particularly in the valleys of Vermont and western Massachusetts.

On Wednesday, high pressure will bring a brief break in the active pattern, with dry conditions and partial sunshine. However, another system will approach by Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing widespread rain to southern New England and a mix of rain and snow across interior and northern areas.

A colder air mass will move in behind this system by Friday, bringing a return to seasonable late-February temperatures. Another clipper system this weekend could bring snow showers across New York and New England, followed by a reinforcing shot of cold air.
