Tuesday Insights:
Lots to Cover! Thick Smoke, Blizzard Warnings & Elevation Snow

In this Insights video, Danielle highlights active weather across the country; from bombogenesis occurring on the west coast, to severe weather along the Gulf Coast to brush fires here at home. Watch the video for many more details and read on for specifics regarding our forecast here in New England.

Fire Danger Persists Today

Critical fire weather conditions remain in effect across parts of New England, fueled by breezy northwest winds and dry conditions. Smoke from active brush fires—such as those in Coventry (CT), Milton (MA), and Boxford (MA)—is creating areas of smoke, thick in spots, especially in Essex County, including Beverly, Danvers, and Marblehead. Lighter winds on Wednesday will provide a brief reprieve ahead of Thursday’s rain.

Thursday’s Storm: Rain Arrives

An area of low-pressure system will bring steady rain to much of southern and central New England, with totals ranging from 0.5 to 1 inch south of the Massachusetts border, tapering to 0.25 inches or less farther north. While it won’t end drought conditions, this rain will help ease fire risks and offer some relief for dry soils. Have the wet weather gear with you – as rain arrives during the morning and will continue for much of the day, tapering in coverage and intensity during the evening.

Change to Wet Snow

Colder air arriving late Thursday into Friday brings the potential for wet snow to mix in above 1,500 feet.

  • Timing: Some wet snowflakes mixing in begins Thursday evening and may continue into Friday, especially in the Berkshires, southern Greens, and Whites.
  • Accumulations: Accumulation will be limited to higher elevations – thoughts on anticipated snow totals to come tomorrow!
