1st Weekend Edition of 2025: January 4-5

As we dive into the weekend, New England braces for a cold and blustery stretch that will have many bundling up against biting winds and low temperatures. Saturday and Sunday both bring below-average highs, with temperatures in the teens and 20s in northern New England and hovering near 30°F in southern parts of the region. While actual highs may not seem extreme for January, the persistent winds will make it feel much colder, with wind chills in the single digits and teens, and even sub-zero values in parts of northern Maine and New Hampshire.

Periodic snow showers will linger in the mountains, particularly the Green Mountains and Berkshires, with light accumulations of 1–4 inches possible at higher elevations. Lake-effect streamers could even bring a brief flurry to central Massachusetts or southern Vermont. Cape Cod may see ocean-effect clouds and even a few flurries this weekend, though most of the snow will remain offshore.

Sunday brings a blend of sun and clouds for most areas, but the biting wind remains. Patriots fans headed to Gillette Stadium for the Bills game will need to dress warmly. While kickoff temperatures hover near 30°F, wind chills will make it feel like the teens to around 20°F, with occasional gusts over 20 mph adding challenging conditions for players too.

Looking ahead to Monday, the much-discussed coastal storm looks likely to stay south of New England, but the South Coast may see a light graze of snow or flurries – we’ll keep you posted. Otherwise, the cold continues into midweek, with highs staying 5–15 degrees below average and wind chills making it feel even colder.
