Weekend Insights:
Impactful Storm to Bring Snow, Ice, Heavy Rain & Wind to the Northeast

A significant winter storm is set to impact New England this weekend, bringing a combination of accumulating snow, freezing rain, sleet, heavy rain and strong winds. Whether you’re in Boston, the mountains, or along the South Coast, the impacts will vary dramatically depending on your location.

A blustery west-northwest wind is ushering in cold air, with gusts of 40-50 mph making it feel even colder. Highs struggle in the 20s, with wind chills in the single digits and teens at best. Overnight lows drop into the single digits and teens, setting the stage for accumulating snow as the next storm arrives late Saturday.

  • Afternoon: Dry for most, but snow spreads into Western New England between 1-4 PM
  • Evening: Snow reaches Boston & Eastern MA between 6-8 PM
  • Overnight: Heaviest snowfall in Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine, while southern New England transitions to a wintry mix

Sunday: Wintry Mix & Heavy Rain

  • Early Morning: Freezing rain & sleet push north into central New England, while southern areas see rain
  • Heavy Snow Continues: 12-18 inches possible in the mountains
  • Localized Flooding Concern: Heavy rain from the South Coast to Cape Cod

How much snow will fall? There aren’t any big changes from Matt’s early estimate yesterday. (See video for zoomed in versions & specific amounts)

  • Northern New England: 12-18 inches in the mountains
  • Central New England: 6-12 inches ,some sleet mixing in
  • Southern New England: 4-8 inches north of I-90, lower totals where sleet/rain mix in (4-6″ Boston, 2-4″ South Shore)
  • Cape Cod & Islands: Coating to 3 inches before brief mix then rain takes over

Monday: Dangerous Winds & Deep Freeze

  • Wind Gusts: 45-60 mph—scattered power outages & tree damage possible
  • Bitter Cold: Wind chills in the single digits & teens (sub-zero in the far North Country)
