Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Humidity, Downpours, Flooding Potential & Severe Weather Threat

Periodic showers and downpours will crop up today as the humidity continues to rise with downright soupy air in place by this afternoon. As the remnants of Debby swing through this evening and overnight tonight, localized flooding and a slight risk of severe weather are the biggest concerns in western New England. Conditions will rapidly improve on Saturday. Danielle has all the details in today’s video and written version below.

Rainfall and Flash Flooding Risk

Localized flooding is a concern, particularly in western New England, as the remnants of Tropical Depression Debby swing through. As the day progresses, you can expect showers and downpours to crop up. The heaviest axis of rain will arrive in Western New England from late afternoon into the evening, with the potential for 1 to 2″ per hour rainfall rates. These tropical downpours will be highly variable, meaning one town might get a quick inch of rain, while a neighboring town might see much less. Rainfall totals will be on the order of 1-3″ in western New England with amounts tapering off through eastern New England to around 0.5″-1″.

Wind Gusts and Severe Weather Threat

While we’re not overly concerned about wind today, gusts could reach 35 to 45 mph along the south coast this evening and overnight and up to 50 mph in parts of central and northern Vermont, where a wind advisory is in effect. Most of New England will experience gusts between 20 to 30 mph, with some coastal areas in Maine potentially seeing gusts around 40 mph overnight.

The severe weather threat remains isolated, with the greatest risk in Western New England. The tornado threat is low but not zero in this zone, where we could see some rotation in thunderstorms this evening between 8 PM and midnight especially.

What to Expect Tonight

Tonight, temperatures will remain in the 70s for most areas, with 60s across Maine and Northern New England. As the axis of heaviest rain shifts eastward, Western New England will start to dry out early, while the rest of the region will see some lingering rain and downpours shifting offshore rapidly tomorrow morning.
