Pattern Predictions: Classic New England January Incoming – Cold & Snow Ahead!

As we close out the year and start 2025, Matt Noyes says New England is gearing up for a true return to winter! A long-lasting cold and potentially very snowy pattern begins midweek and shows no signs of letting up anytime soon, with Matt saying this January is showing signs of something we haven’t seen in the Northeast in years: classic and “old school” persistent winter.  A brief written summary is below, but if you love weather, you want to watch the video!

What’s Driving the Change?
A cross-polar flow from Siberia to Canada to New England is setting the stage for below-normal temperatures and active storm chances throughout January. The shift starts with a colder jet stream setup by Thursday and intensifies in the weeks to follow.

Key Snow Chances to Watch

Monday-Tuesday (Jan 6-7):

  • Potential storm development brings a chance for accumulating snow, especially for northern areas.

Late Next Week:

  • Another strong disturbance may deliver a second round of snow, depending on its track.

Mid-Month Outlook:

  • Active jet stream feeding moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific keeps snow chances alive.

The 14-Day Snow Potential:

  • Early snow remains elevation-dependent, favoring the northern mountains in upslope and lake-effect snow (see our Insights videos for more on that).
  • By mid-month, there’s no sign the pattern will ease, which means every disturbance that passes nearby will be one to watch for accumulating snow.

🌨️ A True New England Winter Returns!
This setup of sustained cold and multiple snow chances gives more hope than we’ve seen in a long time to winter lovers, whether you’re a winter sports enthusiast or just love a snowy scene, this is the pattern you’ve been waiting for!
