Pattern Predictions – ‘Tis the Season for the Big Question: Can I Plant Yet??

This week’s Pattern Predictions from Matt Noyes dives into the weather pattern for the next two weeks across New England. The forecast is mild, but the bigger question on many minds: Can we finally start planting?

Right now, New England is sitting in a split jet stream, with northern energy and southern moisture mostly staying separate. That’s kept us storm-free so far, but as the weekend approaches, those streams begin to merge—leading to the next organized system and likely some weekend rain.

That’s not the only change in store.

“We could see highs in the 80s again by the middle of next week,” Matt explains. “But there are also hints that colder air may make a comeback around May 10–11.”

That means frost is still a possibility for northern areas and some central zones of New England. For those along the South Coast, Cape, and Islands, you’re probably in the clear to plant. But elsewhere?

🧊 Here’s the frost breakdown:

  • South Coast & Islands: Safe to plant now

  • Boston–Providence–Hartford corridor: Likely safe, but watch this weekend

  • Interior CT, Western & Northern MA, 495 corridor: Hold off for now unless they’re frost-hardy plants

  • Northern NH, VT, ME: Stick to the usual mid-late May timing until we gain more clarity on that timeframe

Meanwhile, after a warm spike Tuesday–Wednesday next week, temperatures trend near normal again as we head into May. And thanks to a wavy jet stream, we’ll also get several chances for showers or thunderstorms—though no big storms are expected for now.

🎯 Key Days to Watch:

  • Saturday: Likely wet, but we may sneak in a midday break (keep watch of our Insights videos this week)

  • Sunday: Trending drier

  • Next week: Multiple shower chances but mostly mild

💧 Rain totals through the weekend may reach 1″ across southern New England, heavier north. There’s also a small chance of upslope mountain snow in far northern New England late Sunday or Sunday night.
