Snowy Saturday: What to Expect Across New England

Winter’s touch is here this Saturday as light snow spreads across New England. Though not a major storm, the snow is sticking thanks to below-freezing temperatures, making for picturesque scenes and some slick spots on untreated roads. Matt Noyes has details in the video..

Timing the Snow

Snow began overnight and will continue into midday for most of the region. By late morning, light snow reaches central Maine, while it begins tapering in western and central New England. The Cape and eastern Massachusetts may see lingering snow showers into the evening, driven by a weak atmospheric disturbance extending off the coast.

  • Morning: Snow fills in across New England, with temperatures below freezing ensuring accumulation.
  • Afternoon: Snow ends in central and western areas by 2–3 p.m., with eastern Massachusetts and northern New England continuing to see snow showers.
  • Evening: Isolated snow showers may linger along the coast, with Cape Cod seeing the last flurries as late as 11 p.m.

Snow Totals

Here’s how much snow to expect:

  • Southern New England: Coating to 1 inch for southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern Massachusetts except the Cape.
  • Many Others: 1–2 inches, with localized 3–4 inches near Cape Ann, in Northeast MA and into southeastern New Hampshire.
  • Northern New England: 2–4 inches in the higher terrain, with most areas seeing closer to 2 inches.

Road Conditions & Refreeze Concerns

Road surfaces remain cold, so untreated roads will likely become slick, even in areas receiving minimal snow. By evening, temperatures will gradually drop into the 20s, potentially causing refreezing even on treated surfaces. Drive cautiously if heading out this evening or overnight.

Looking Ahead

Sunday promises a brighter day with sunshine returning and highs climbing into the mid-30s for southern New England. Northern areas will stay colder in the 20s, but the breezy conditions from earlier this week will ease significantly.
