Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Much of Southern New England Until Overnight at 2 AM

The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of Central and Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the nearby coastal waters. This watch is effective until 2:00 AM EDT Thursday morning.

Primary Threats:

  • Damaging Wind Gusts: Scattered gusts up to 65 mph are possible.

Summary:

An organized squall line will continue to move east-northeast across southern New England through the late evening and early overnight hours. Widely scattered strong to severe gusts (50-65 mph) will be possible with the more intense thunderstorm cores and embedded surges in the squall line.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:

  • Stay Informed: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and around the watch area. Stay alert for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
  • Monitor Flash Flooding: Given the ongoing areas of flash flooding, remain vigilant and avoid driving through flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.

Understanding Severe Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms. This watch serves as an early alert to be prepared for possible severe weather.

What to Do During a Severe Thunderstorm Watch:

  1. Stay Alert: Monitor weather updates from reliable sources such as the National Weather Service, local news, or weather apps.
  2. Prepare Your Home: Secure outdoor items that could be blown away by strong winds.
  3. Plan for Shelter: Know where to take shelter if a warning is issued. This should be an interior room on the lowest floor of your home, away from windows.
  4. Charge Devices: Ensure your mobile devices are fully charged in case of power outages.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when a severe thunderstorm has been observed or indicated by radar. It means that severe weather is imminent or occurring, and immediate action should be taken to protect life and property.

What to Do During a Severe Thunderstorm Warning:

  1. Take Shelter Immediately: Move to a sturdy building and stay away from windows. An interior room on the lowest floor is safest.
  2. Avoid Using Electrical Appliances: Unplug appliances to avoid damage from power surges.
  3. Stay Informed: Continue to listen to weather updates and do not venture outside until the storm has passed.
