Summer storms got you wondering?

With all of the recent severe thunderstorm watches and warnings, the 1°Outside team wants to make sure you know the difference. It’s critical!

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:

  • Stay Informed: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Stay alert for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
  • Be Prepared: Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes. Have a plan in place for where to seek shelter if severe weather strikes.

Understanding Severe Thunderstorm Watches And Warnings:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are ripe for severe storms in your area. This is a heads-up to be prepared and stay alert. Severe thunderstorms are defined as those producing:

  • Hail 1 inch or larger in diameter
  • Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when a severe thunderstorm has been observed or indicated by radar. It means that severe weather is imminent or occurring. You should take immediate action to protect yourself and your property. Severe thunderstorms can produce:

  • Large hail
  • Damaging winds
  • Torrential rainfall
  • Frequent lightning

Real-World Application:

During a Severe Thunderstorm Watch:

  • Monitor the Weather: Keep an eye on the sky and listen to weather updates from trusted sources.
  • Prepare for Action: Make sure you have a plan for where to go if a warning is issued, and ensure you have access to a safe shelter.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or secure items that could be blown away by strong winds.

During a Severe Thunderstorm Warning:

  • Take Shelter Immediately: Move to a sturdy building and stay away from windows. A basement or an interior room on the lowest floor is best.
  • Avoid Electrical Appliances: Unplug appliances if possible to avoid damage from power surges.
  • Stay Informed: Continue to listen to weather updates and do not venture outside until the storm has passed.
