Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:
- Stay Informed: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Stay alert for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
- Be Prepared: Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes. Have a plan in place for where to seek shelter if severe weather strikes.
Understanding Severe Thunderstorm Watches And Warnings:
Severe Thunderstorm Watch: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are ripe for severe storms in your area. This is a heads-up to be prepared and stay alert. Severe thunderstorms are defined as those producing:
- Hail 1 inch or larger in diameter
- Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher
Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when a severe thunderstorm has been observed or indicated by radar. It means that severe weather is imminent or occurring. You should take immediate action to protect yourself and your property. Severe thunderstorms can produce:
- Large hail
- Damaging winds
- Torrential rainfall
- Frequent lightning

During a Severe Thunderstorm Watch:
- Monitor the Weather: Keep an eye on the sky and listen to weather updates from trusted sources.
- Prepare for Action: Make sure you have a plan for where to go if a warning is issued, and ensure you have access to a safe shelter.
