Thursday Evening Essentials: Pockets of Rain, Surge in Humidity Friday as Debby’s Moisture Arrives

As the moisture associated with Debby continues to approach the Northeast, pockets of rain and showers will move through this evening and overnight tonight. While New England will largely escape the brunt of the storm, Vermont, already reeling from earlier flash floods this year, faces the highest risk of flash flooding and potential severe weather Friday evening into night.  And while Friday won’t be the best day overall, there will be some dry periods in spots, which Danielle highlights in the Outdoor Outlook. Full details in the video & blog below.

Forecast Details:

Expect a truly oppressive tropical air mass by tomorrow afternoon and evening, with dew points rising into the 70s. We’ve enjoyed a brief break from the humidity, but that changes tomorrow. Pockets of showers and rain will lift across central and northern New England tonight, with an isolated shower possible elsewhere.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

Morning:

  • Eastern New England: Passing showers, some pockets of rain in northern Maine and northern Vermont.
  • The heaviest rain will still be to our west.

Afternoon and Evening:

  • The heaviest rain shifts into western New England with tropical downpours, embedded thunder, and localized severe weather possible.
  • Even by 8 PM, eastern New England, especially the coast of Maine down to Cape Cod is removed from the heaviest rain still, which will sweep through during the late evening into the night, pushing offshore by Saturday.

Flash Flooding Risk

Flood watches are up along the eastern seaboard, extending into upstate New York, northern Vermont, and New Hampshire. These watches take effect Friday morning and last until Saturday morning. Expect localized flooding in some areas. Matt highlights the flooding and severe weather threat here.

Important Safety Reminder:

  • Six inches of water can sweep a person away.
  • 12 inches can sweep a car away.
  • 18 inches can sweep a small truck away.
  • If you encounter flash flooding, turn around and don’t drown. Seek higher ground immediately if a flash flood warning is issued.

Predicted Highs for Tomorrow

  • Temperatures will range from the 70s to the lower 80s.
  • Showers and downpours are expected in the mountains and lakes region, with greater chances of downpours by the evening.
  • Beaches: Expect showers in the morning, with isolated showers in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy with a low UV index. The rip current risk is moderate, and seas will build to 2-4 feet.
