Thursday Insights:
Attention Turning to Weekend Winter Storm

Matt Noyes expects the increasing wind Thursday night and Friday to deliver cold air that sets the stage for an incoming winter storm later Saturday into Sunday…with a punishing wind possible Monday. Matt provides all the details including a “Ya But If You Had to Guess” snow map for the weekend, LOL!  Check it all out in the video!

New England’s weekend storm is shaping up to be a classic winter mess, featuring snow, a wintry mix, rain, and strong winds. Cold air locks in Friday, ensuring that when precipitation arrives Saturday evening, it will start as snow nearly everywhere. However, warmer air surging northward will create a sharp transition to sleet and rain in central and southern New England by early Sunday.

Friday: Gusty Winds & Cold

  • Expect gusts of 40-50 mph late Thursday night into Friday morning.
  • Temperatures struggle in the 20s, with wind chills in the single digits & teens at the warmest time of day.
  • Friday night: The breeze continues, keeping wind chills near or below zero in many areas.

Saturday Evening: Snow Begins

  • Mid-to-late afternoon start time (3-6 PM for many).
  • Temperatures in the 20s ensure snow accumulates quickly after sunset.
  • Overnight: Heavy snow falls across much of Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine, while southern New England begins transitioning to sleet & rain.

Sunday: The Mess Continues

  • By sunrise Sunday: A mix of sleet & freezing rain spreads northward, possibly reaching southern New Hampshire & Vermont.
  • Heavy snow continues in northern New England, where a foot or more of snow is expected.
  • Southern New England: Snow will turn to rain, with heaviest rain from the South Coast to Cape Cod.

Monday: Wicked Winds Take Over

  • As the storm exits, damaging wind gusts of 45-60 mph could cause scattered power outages and make travel difficult.
  • Wind chills will be brutal, with subzero readings possible in northern New England.

How Much Snow?  Too early to say for sure – “ya but if you had to guess”

  • Northern New England: 12-18 inches in the high terrain of the Greens, Whites & Northern Maine.
  • Central New England: 6-12 inches before mixing.
  • Southern New England: 4-8 inches north of I-90, lower totals where sleet/rain mix in sooner.
  • Cape Cod & the Islands: Coating to 3 inches before rain takes over.
