The updated Drought Monitor is in, and it reflects the dry weather we’ve been experiencing across New England. Moderate drought conditions have expanded in several areas, including Southern Berkshire County, Litchfield Hills, Worcester Hills, and now the city of Boston. This expansion also includes portions of the South Shore and the 495 belt.
What’s Ahead: Crisp Fall Weather
As we head into the weekend, another cold front is on its way, bringing cooler and crisp fall air to the region. Here’s what to expect:
- Tonight: After some light showers this morning that didn’t amount to much, we’ll experience clear skies as dry air moves in behind the cold front. Expect a cooler, fall-like evening as high pressure builds in.
- Friday: A beautiful fall day is in store, with mostly sunny skies, light winds, and temperatures around 60 degrees in Southern and Eastern New England. Farther north, temperatures will stay in the 50s. There’s no need to worry about frost in most areas overnight, although far Northern New England could see a touch of it.
Weekend Outlook: Cooler, Breezy, and a Quick Shower Risk
- Saturday: Look forward to another pleasant day, with sunshine and temperatures ranging from 60 to 65 degrees in the south. Some spots in southwestern New England may hit the upper 60s, while areas farther north stay in the 50s. Winds will be breezy, at 10-20 mph. There is a slight chance of a passing shower in Northern New England, but the overall risk is low.
- Sunday: Expect a cooler day, with highs only in the low to mid 50s and 40s in far northern areas. Snow showers are possible in far Northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Northwest Maine with elevation as colder air settles in. Sunday night brings the coldest temperatures of the season thus far for some, with widespread 20s inland and below 40 in Boston for the first time this season. Many areas will experience a hard freeze.
Looking Ahead: Early Week Chill, Halloween Warm-Up
- Monday: We’ll stay chilly to start the week, with highs near 50 degrees and 40s in the north. Sunshine will be plentiful, but the Northwest breeze will keep it feeling cool.
- Halloween: Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to warm back up into the 60s and 70s by the middle of next week, just in time for Halloween! Mild weather should stick around, making it easy for the kids to show off their costumes without the need for extra layers.
