Thursday Insights: Ocean Storm Nearby, Drought Monitor Update

The latest Drought Monitor reveals an expansion of abnormally dry conditions across New England, particularly in central New Hampshire, Maine’s coastline, into Boston, and portions of Cape Cod. This comes as no surprise given the lack of significant rainfall recently, and unfortunately, dry conditions are likely to persist for many of us through the beginning of week. With minimal rain in the forecast, next week’s drought update will likely see a continued expansion of the yellow areas (abnormally dry) on the map.

Ocean Storm Nearby

While much of New England will remain dry, a storm system off the coast will influence the weather for Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod through Saturday. Showers are expected to spread across the region, with Cape Cod & the South Shore seeing some steadier showers and pockets of rain. Rainfall totals won’t be much – from a few hundredths of an inch in parts of eastern New England, with the Cape & South Shore seeing 0.25 to 0.5″ through Saturday with the chance of an 1″ on the mid/outer Cape.

Weekend Weather Outlook: Variable Clouds, Persistent Onshore Flow

As we head into the weekend, expect onshore winds and cloudy skies along the coast, with a few isolated showers expected in Southeastern Massachusetts. Inland areas should see some sunshine, but keep an umbrella handy if you’re near the coast, especially for outdoor plans. Temperatures will range from the upper 60s along the coast to the low 70s inland, providing a comfortable feel with manageable humidity levels.

By Sunday, the storm system begins to weaken and depart farther offshore, allowing for more sunshine to break through, especially across the interior. However, coastal areas may still experience stubborn cloud cover and cooler temperatures due to persistent onshore winds. Highs on Sunday will range from the mid-60s along the coastline to the low 70s inland. The high rip current risk will continue at the coast, so be cautious if heading to the beach. Minor pockets of coastal flooding are also likely during the Saturday high tide cycles with 5-10′ seas, onshore wind and astronomical high tides.

Looking Ahead: Cooler Temperatures as Fall Kicks Off

As fall officially begins with the autumnal equinox on Sunday morning, the cooler trend will persist into the early part of next week. Monday will bring more of the same with temperatures in the mid-60s to low 70s and a mix of clouds and sun.
