Thursday Insights: Remnant of Debby Readies to Head North

Tropical Storm Debby’s remnant storm circulation will deliver flooding rain to the Northeast – but most of that falls in Pennsylvania and Upstate New York, not on New England.  That said, Vermont – so hard hit by flash flooding already this year – stands the greatest chance for flash flooding and possibly some severe weather Friday evening into night. Matt has details for all of New England, including whether you can try and get your golf game in Friday, in today’s Insights video.

Today’s Forecast

We’re starting off dry, but showers are expected to move into Connecticut by later today and will spread to the rest of us by this evening and tonight.

Friday’s Weather

Expect a “spray” of showers and embedded downpours from time to time on Friday. There will be breaks between the showers, so if you have plans like golfing, you might be able to dodge the rain, particularly the farther east in New England you are…thinking especially Eastern New England. However, be prepared for periods of rain throughout the day. The worst of the weather will hit late Friday evening into Friday night.

Rain and Flash Flooding Concerns, Weekend Outlook

Friday Night/Saturday:

  • Friday Night: Rain, downpours, embedded thunder. Flash flooding spreads from Pennsylvania and Upstate New York into parts of Northern and Western Vermont, where two inches of rain falls in Vermont and 3″+ in Upstate New York.  River flooding is likely in New York and some rivers may overflow their banks by Friday night into Saturday in Vermont, but major river flooding is not anticipated in the Green Mountain State at this time. An embedded severe storm or rotating storm can’t be ruled out, particularly in Western and Northern New England, but is less likely than in New York, for example. Gusty breeze from the south for many of us, but gusts up to 40-45 mph along the South Coast, Block Island, Westerly, Narragansett, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod, and the islands.
  • Morning: The rain from Debbie’s remnants will move out by mid to late morning.
  • Afternoon: Conditions will improve significantly with clearing skies.
  • Highs: Temperatures will reach the 80s with lower humidity evident by late day.

Sunday:

  • Overall: Comfortable and pleasant with a potential pop-up shower.
  • Highs: 75-80 degrees.
