Although a few showers are expected with the passage of a cold front Friday night, Matt Noyes explains in our meteorological deep-dive Insights video that a “split flow” in the jet stream is the cause of dry weather far and wide through much of the nation, including here in New England.
After several days of dry weather, this pattern continues for the rest of the week. High pressure has been dominant, which means most of New England will stay precipitation-free, with temperatures warming into the 70s on Friday. Even as a weak cold front approaches, it lacks the moisture to produce significant rain. In fact, it’s going to slow down, giving us a warm, dry day on Friday with highs in the 70s far and wide, perfect for the Topsfield Fair opening.
A split flow in the jet stream is a key reason for the dry conditions. The northern jet stream is carrying energy but lacks moisture, while the subtropical jet stream, which holds the moisture, stays locked to the south. This separation means we won’t see big storms merging to bring widespread rain. Any showers will be brief and scattered, especially overnight Friday into Saturday morning, and mostly gone by Saturday morning.
Expect highs in the 70s on Friday, with high altitude clouds but no rain. Friday night, a few showers may pop up, but temperatures drop into the 50s. By Saturday morning, the showers will move out of eastern New England, and we’re left with a beautiful day. Temperatures will reach the 70s in southern New England and the 60s in the north, making it a perfect day for youth sports, the Topsfield Fair, or any outdoor activities.
Sunday brings another great day with temperatures in the mid-60s to 70°F and light winds. For those heading to Gillette Stadium for the Patriots game, expect fair skies and comfortable tailgating weather.
Monday brings a slight chance of showers, mostly in the morning, followed by a new shot of cooler air. Highs will be between 65 and 70°F for many, making for another pleasant autumn day.
