Thursday Insights:
More rain on the way…
but Mother’s Day looks like a gem!

This is one of those classic New England spring stretches: soggy, slow-moving systems — but if you’ve been waiting for sunshine and warmth, hold tight, it’s coming.

Let’s start with the Drought Monitor, which was updated this morning. The soaking rain of the past week has made a dent — about a 10% reduction in abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions across the region. And with more rain coming tomorrow, we should see additional improvement by next week.

The Setup

Another upper-level low is swirling west of us — and you’ll feel its presence Friday and Saturday. That system slides east on Friday, delivering rounds of rain and even embedded thunderstorms in spots. Heaviest rainfall targets the lower Connecticut River Valley, where 2-4″ may fall by Saturday evening.

Timing the Rain

  • Friday: Pockets of downpours and some thunder in the afternoon.

  • Friday Night: Renewed rain fills in across much of New England.

  • Saturday: Hit-or-miss showers and downpours continue, especially north. Late-day improvement arrives west to east.

  • Saturday Night: Rain lingers in central/eastern Maine.

So, it’s not a washout of a weekend — but Saturday will be unsettled, particularly in central and northern areas.

Mother’s Day: Here Comes the Sun

Sunday brings a welcome change: sunshine and dry air returning for most. Temperatures will reach near 70 in southern New England, with 60s to the north. The only caveat? A weak disturbance might spark an isolated shower in the afternoon, but this shouldn’t derail any brunch plans or outdoor time with Mom.

Looking Ahead

Early next week looks even better — highs in the 70s, even 80s by midweek — and much of the region finally breaks free of this parade of disturbances.

Local Flooding Still a Concern

Minor river flooding continues along parts of the Connecticut River, and with more rain incoming, keep an eye on urban flooding and rising smaller rivers through Saturday.
