This weekend’s forecast has been a bit of a moving target — and meteorologist Danielle Noyes is here to explain why.
We’re heading into a weather pattern that meteorologists call an “Omega block.” Two upper-level storm systems sitting on either side of the country with a ridge of high pressure wedged between. That setup slows everything down in the atmosphere — and makes it tough to predict exactly where rain will fall and when.
For New England, that means we’re caught in the middle of a tug-of-war between a stalling cold front and high pressure trying to push in from Canada (also known as a “Rex block”). How that battle plays out will determine where the steadiest rain sets up this weekend.
Here’s what we know right now:
Friday brings warm air with highs in the 70s, even some near 80. There’s a chance for a thunderstorm in western New England late in the day — but it won’t be widespread. Most of the day is dry.
Saturday is trending better — especially in the morning. You might even get away with outdoor activities before scattered showers develop in the afternoon and evening. It’s not a washout, but keep the umbrella nearby.
Sunday brings cooler air with the possibility of more showers, especially in western and northern New England.
Monday looks unsettled and cool (especially at the coast)— lots of clouds, 50s to low 60s, and some possible showers.
The bottom line: this isn’t an all-weekend rainout, but it is unsettled. And with temperatures varying from 50s to 70s depending on cloud cover and location, dressing in layers (and packing an umbrella) is the way to go.
