Thursday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Breezy, Hot & Humid, Dangerous Rip Currents

It’s going to be another hot and humid day for many with heat index values climbing into the middle to upper 90s in southern NH and parts of northeast MA where a heat advisory is in effect again today. Otherwise, thunder should be fairly limited today, though a hit or miss storm is possible, particularly in northern and central New England this afternoon. Details in the video – or in written form below!

Humidity and High Surf

The humidity remains high today, but it’s a bit less oppressive than yesterday. Dew points were well into the 70s, but they’ve come down just a notch. If you’re sensitive to humidity, you will notice the slight difference today. There’s high surf too, so use caution at the beaches. Waves are between four to seven feet in some spots, increasing the risk of rip currents.

Rainfall and Flooding

We are still monitoring localized flooding in far northern New England with some areas seeing over 4 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Burlington, St. Johnsbury, and Berlin, New Hampshire, have all recorded significant rainfall, extending into north-central Maine. Areas of flooding continues in these areas, and any additional rain today with a pop-up thunderstorm will only exacerbate the issue.

Today’s Weather Forecast

  • Highs: 85 to 90 degrees
  • Weather: Clouds and a few showers and downpours will clear out this morning, giving way to sunshine. Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod may see some stubborn clouds, keeping temperatures in the 80s.
  • Winds: Gusts between 20 to 35 mph throughout the day.
  • Humidity: Still high, but slightly reduced from yesterday.
  • UV Index: High in most areas, lower in southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod due to cloud cover.
  • Rip Currents: High risk across southern New England, moderate in some areas. High risk particularly along the outer Cape, the National Seashore, and the south coast of Nantucket and the Vineyard.

Predicted Radar and Overnight Conditions

  • Afternoon: Showers and downpours will develop in northern and central Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and central Maine. Some storms could be strong, especially in far northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and central Maine. Southern New England will generally be removed from the action, with only isolated showers or downpours expected on Cape Cod.
  • Evening: Showers and storms will diminish, with skies clearing temporarily overnight. Low clouds and fog will develop in Cape Cod and northern New England.
  • Overnight Lows: 60s for many areas, lower 70s closer to the coastline.

Weekend Outlook

Areas of rain and localized flooding will be possible Friday night into part of Saturday in southern New England. Sunday looks dry and hot again with highs around 90. For more on the weekend in detail, stay tuned for our upcoming 1°Outside Insights video.
