Meteorologist Matt Noyes tells us rain will break apart into showers and thunder at midweek, then a bit of a breather (relatively speaking) Thursday before brand new atmospheric energy fires up the rain again Friday into Saturday. Watch this Tuesday Insights video for all the details on the days ahead, including a preview of the weekend.
A swirling upper-level storm over the Ohio Valley is still driving Atlantic moisture into New England. That means more showers, embedded thunderstorms, and downpours for many of us—particularly across central and southern New England.
Rain totals already top 2–3 inches in parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts. We’ll add another 1–2 inches this week in some spots. Northern New England and the Cape see less, but no one escapes entirely.
Several rivers have already reached minor flood stage:
Connecticut River (rising toward minor flood in coming days)
Housatonic, Still River, Mill River (already in minor flood)
These aren’t flash floods — it’s slower to develop, but we’ll be monitoring localized flooding potential, especially along smaller rivers and in flood-prone lowlands.
After today’s soaking, Wednesday brings breaks of sun but it’s what we call “self-destructive sunshine.” That sun helps fuel scattered thunderstorms, which means more lightning than the last couple of days, especially midday and afternoon.
We’ve been talking about Thursday as the week’s best shot at drier weather – and that still holds true. Yes, there could be a stray shower as a weak cold front moves in, but much of the day is quiet with temps near 70.
A new upper-level low dives in Friday and Saturday, combining with Gulf moisture and reinforcing this wet pattern. Friday looks particularly rainy with scattered showers continuing Saturday (though a bit more broken up).
Sunday still looks like a winner – finally! Sunshine returns to much of New England with drier air settling in. Temps will be warmest inland, a bit cooler along the coast. It’s the kind of day we’ve all been waiting for.
