Tuesday Insights: Multiple Storms Coming…Not All Excite Snow Lovers

Matt Noyes says after Wednesday scattered ocean-effect snow showers for some, the Wednesday night event is really failing to impress from a snow standpoint for Southern New England – a bit more will fall in the north.  Of course, as always, Matt doesn’t leave it there…in today’s Insights deep-dive he explains the meteorology behind the forecast and looks ahead to later storm chances and a shot of meaningful cold early next week.

New England’s winter pattern remains active and full of storm chances, but if you’re a snow lover, the midweek system may leave you wanting more. While ocean-effect snow showers will develop Wednesday across eastern Massachusetts, the main system arriving Wednesday night will lack strong energy, limiting its snow potential for much of southern New England. Northern New England will have better chances for accumulation, but even there, this storm is unlikely to be a major snow producer.

The next system arrives this weekend, and while some early forecasts suggest snow starting Saturday morning, Matt Noyes isn’t sold on that timing yet. He believes the better chance for precipitation comes Saturday evening into Saturday night, with another round of snow changing to a mix or rain for southern New England. Skiers and snowmobilers will be happy, though, because northern New England is expected to stay cold enough for more snow.

Then comes a blast of arctic cold early next week. The big question? Will this cold set the stage for another storm mid-to-late next week? Right now, it looks possible, and given New England’s recent pattern of midweek and weekend storms, it wouldn’t be surprising.

Midweek System: Light Snow & Icy Spots

  • Tuesday night: Some light snow near the South Coast (coating to 2″ possible, see 1°Outside Today 24-hour forecast video for more on that).
  • Wednesday: Cold with ocean-effect snow showers in eastern Massachusetts.
  • Wednesday night: Snow spreads in, but some of Southern New England may start as a mix of sleet and freezing rain.
  • Thursday morning: Snow to mix and rain for southern New England; northern areas see 2-4 inches of snow – more in parts of Maine – before transitioning.

Impact: This isn’t a big snowstorm, but icy roads are possible Thursday morning, especially north and west of I-95 where untreated surfaces could be slick.

Weekend Storm: Another Snow-to-Mix Setup?

  • Saturday: Uncertainty remains on timing, but Matt believes the storm holds off until later in the day.
  • Saturday night into Sunday: Snow likely at first, but mixing or rain eventually moves in, especially for Southern New England.
  • Ski country sees more snow! Expect another fresh layer in the mountains, even if a changeover eventually moves in.

Arctic Cold Next Week & More Storm Chances

  • Sunday night into Monday: Temperatures drop sharply with bitter cold taking hold.
  • Monday-Tuesday: Cold temperatures and frigid wind chills.
  • Midweek next week: Another storm possible as cold air lingers—will this one stay all snow?  Too early to say, but again, some snow is likely in the beginning of the storm.

The Big Picture: Still in the Game for Snow!

While no blockbuster storms are in the forecast yet, New England remains in an active pattern. The jet stream continues to favor storm development, meaning frequent snow chances will continue into next week. If you’re looking for consistent winter weather, you’ve got it.
