April is off to a classic New England start — with snow, sleet, freezing rain, and 60s all packed into just a few days. This week brings yet another brief return to wintry weather before a quick warm-up, gusty winds, and a new round of rain by the weekend.
A spring storm sweeping across the central U.S. brings a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain into New England Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. While southern New England sees mostly rain (a quarter inch or less), parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine may see:
Snow Accumulations: Coating to 2 inches in valleys, 1–3 inches in higher elevations
Light Icing: Particularly in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and western Maine, with up to 0.25″ in spots
Slick Travel: Late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning
Milder air surges in behind the warm front Thursday, melting any early icing quickly. Expect:
Highs in the 50s & 60s, with a few spots near 70°
Showers & Downpours, mainly later in the day
Isolated Thunder possible in far southwestern Connecticut
Gusty Winds from the south-southwest at 30–40 mph
The Red Sox home opener at Fenway Park is looking good!
First Pitch (2:10 PM): Around 60° with a light breeze from third to first base
Mostly Cloudy with Sun Breaks
Mid-50s by game end
The next system looks like it will arrive on Saturday now.
Saturday: Dry start, but rain fills in during the afternoon and evening
Northern New England: Could see brief snow before changing to rain
Sunday: Still some showers around, particularly in northern New England, not a washout south.
Northern & Central New England: 0.5″ to 0.75″
Southern New England: 0.25″ or less
Wednesday Highs: 40s south, 30s north
Thursday Highs: 50s to 60s, with some 70° potential
Friday: 50s north, 60s south
Saturday: Cooler again, 40s to low 50s
